  • April 27 [1942] Visited natural pond in hollow behind Lohbrunners - large swampy area fed by trickle - Mallards present, 1 pair. Scoters, snails etc. suggest pond is permanent. Green frog seen here last week. Found Hyla eggs about 1/3 developed - brought to dark room + photographed by colour movies in afternoon [April] 28 [1942] Inspected pond in Empress gardens and noted that school of young catfish were being herded around edge by parents This artificial lily pond next to Broughton street in Empress grounds was visited several times in previous weeks. Catfish were first observed guarding a hole under rock on street side of pond, directly opposite point of land gained by crossing bridge Fish would enter hole + shortly reappear fanning crater with fins. Last seen doing this on April 24 so eggs hatched between 24 + 27th. Hardy, who also has records of these fish + saw them first, observed several catfish feeding by pushing heads out of water onto lily pads + sweeping insects into water.
