- Tent caterpillars (cont'd [continued])
July 3/42 [1942] This morning we found dipterous
grubs on and around the stove + other equipment,
in frying pan + on seither side of tent
fly. Hardy ibserved them dropping on
tent fly during early morning. Others fell
during the day, apparently from cocoons in
the trees.
Hardy + Geo. [George?] Forbes gathered 100 cocoons
from nearby shrubs for examination.
Results. -
a) 70 of them contained caterpillars
which had failed to pupate. Of these
all contained dipterous larvae; some
contained several.
b) 30 contained pupae, most of which
appeared to be in a weakened condition.
July 4-7 Maggots continued to drop
from cocoons, particularly at night or
in early morning.
When the tent was taken down ont he 7th
several cocoons, of the many attached to
the canvas, contained pupae of the parasite.
Apparently they [illegible word crossed out] had been unable to
get free of the cocoon + so had
pupated in the meshes of the [illegible word].
