- Mammals - Lac la Hache area
Pack-rat [underlined] - On July 2 while eating
supper at camp an object was seen to
fall through the lower branches of a near-
by old Douglas fir. A squirrel was seen
near the centre of disturbance. About twenty
minutes later a squeaking noise near the base
of the tree led to the discovery of a
young pack-rat, still in milk feeding stage;
well haired byt eyes closed. Did the squirrel
drop the rat from the tree or did the rat
fall from an arboreal nest? Obvious signs
of packrat, fresh droppings, lots of bones,
sprigs of evergreen etc. were found under roots
of the same tree. Two traps were set but
without result the first night. (July 4 - 1 [male symbol] caught.)
G. Forbes says they are not as numerous
now as they used to be. He once killed
60 around his buildings some years
ago.
Peromyscus [underlined] [deer mice] - Common, particularly
along lake edge, stream edge + other
damp places. None taken in dry forest.
Zapus [underlined] [jumping mice] - Common along irrigation
stream in field. Some trapped on muddy ground
near thick cover. One taken at lake edge (discarded
on account of damage, possibly by pack-rat.
