  • Cummings Lake - Cariboo: Mile 150 June 29/42 [1942] A small, shallow lake on road to Onward Ranch; Lake in two parts at low water (as on this date) At higher water the intervening land becomes an island. A bloom of flocculent blue-green algae ( [space left blank] ) particularly thick on larger part. Birds [underlined] - Coots - eggs + young. Eared grebe (no nests seen), Golden eye, canvasbacks [duck] (8 non nesting females - insufficient area?), Ruddy, Bufflehead, Sora rail, Red wings [red-winged blackbird?], Yellowheads, Tule wrens. Muskrats were seen. Tadpoles of Bufo [toad] present in large numbers; dying among decomposing algal masses. Cladocera (Daphnia [space left blank]) in swarms; red in colour. Vegetation which once bordered the lake affording much cover has ass been eaten off in most sections by cattle + horses.
