- 17 Dish
Ming dynasty; late i6th/early 17th century

In the centre of this dish is a charming
pictoral scene of birds next to a pond filled
with lotus flowers. The well is decorated
with cloud scrolls enclosed by bamboo
leaves, and the outer rim has cloud scrolls
and comma-shaped leaves. There are four
irises around a central geometric design on
the underside of the dish. The colours in-
clude: red, white, yellow, cobalt blue, and
brown, on a turquoise-blue sky and a dark
green pond.
18 Potiche

This potiche, with bulbous shoulders taper-
ing to a narrow base, is covered with the
Eight Auspicious Signs or Symbols (ba
bao) of Buddhism. These are comprised of
the Wheel of the Law, Conch-shell, Um-
brella, Canopy or Flag, Lotus, Jar, Double
fish, and Mystic knot. There is a lotus
flower under each emblem. The base and
wires of this vessel are copper. The colours
include: red, yellow, white, dark green and
cobalt blue, on a turquoise-blue ground.
