  • 37 Dish Qing dynasty: (1862-1873) d. 18.2 cm; Brian S. McElney Collection This dish, with plain yellow enamelled in- terior, is decorated with two brightly col- oured dragons, one of which is reaching for a flaming pearl, on the exterior. The colours include: red, orange-brown, light blue, turquoise green, light green, pink, and cobalt blue, on a yellow ground. The plain blue enamelled base has a red cloisonne four character mark, Tongzhi nian zao (made in the reign of Tongzhi, 1862-1873). This is the only Tongzhi mark on cloi- sonne thus far published. 38 Vase Qing dynasty; mid to late 19th century h. 29.7 cm; Stephen Lowe Art Gallery This robust vase is covered with fanciful archaistic designs in wire outline, which are derived from motifs found on ancient ritual bronzes. The foremost motifs include mon- ster masks (taotie), and cicada designs, on a key-fret background. The vase has been enamelled completely in green clouded with traces of red, light blue, and yellow. This remarkable colour combination clearly sim- ulates the patina found on ancient bronzes. The base is incised with the name of the maker, Shu Xingde.
