- 34 Pair of Buddhist Lion-Dogs

Each of these exquisite lions is seated on a
rectangular base, which has an overall
decoration of lotus scrolls. On the four sides
are panels framed by gilded lotus petals.
On the top of the base, in cloisonne, is a
simulated brocade cloth hanging down over
the four sides. Beneath the right paw of
the male lion is a ribboned brocade ball,
while the left paw of the female rests on a
playful cub. Each lion has a blue body,
pink and white striped chest, and a thick
blue mane falling in curly tufts onto the
collar which is hung with a bell and two
tassels. A pair of lions like these often
guarded the entrance of tombs, temples
and houses against evil spirits.
