Palanquin (norimono) aux armes de la famille Tokugawa 18th century
Wood with amber nashiji lacquer ground with decorations in gold, green, bronze and brown
Palanquins, such as this one, were used by feudal lords called daimyo and required four porters. This palanquin is made of wood and is lacquered with ground dark amber nashiji. It is decorated with the gold crests of the Tokugawa family and with bamboo in gold, green, bronze and brown maki-e lacquer. The interior has painted textile panels of cranes nesting in a pine tree, and spring flowers.
