  • Chimney Lake Aug [August] 11, 1948. Had a look at Rush Lake. It bears a large variety of diving + pond ducks but most of the latter are on the wing. The encircling rushes make our chances of good banding results most doubtful. We then went down to Alkali Lake + saw a great concentration of ducks. However the lake is very deep + we had to leave the trapping until we could get longer poles. Mr. Riederman showed me several smaller ponds on his upper range including Upper + Lower dam lakes. All these had ducks on them but few broods. He told me of a Goldeneye bringing her young 4 miles to Alkali Lake. On the lake I saw 2 Pelicans + 3 Ring-billed Gulls. Eastern kingbirds are common + are said to have replaced the western recently. Chimney Lake Aug. [August] 12/48 [1948] Returned to Alkali Lake with a load of 30 ft [foot] poles + set out our trap. The operation took longer than was expected + we did not finish
