In vain. – Her childhood friend has already bled to death. For the first time she stands face to face with death the merciless, groping and uncertain; then she finally understands everything which has happened, and is overwhelmed by sorrow at the breast of her dead foster-brother. Heavy were the days that followed, while in the young girl’s mind thoughts of anger and revenge wrestled with her inconsolable sorrow.
