- Translated transcription: Along with several of the servants, Vermundr’s wife Gróa flees over the heath towards the great forests. Gladly would Gróa have followed her husband to his death, but under her belt she has now long borne the family’s hope, and this she will save for revenge and honour.
The way through the heather is heavy going, but the forests promise freedom and safety. Beyond them, far to the east, lies the farm Gróa’s brother possesses, where she expects to find a home for herself and her companions.
The sound of the flames’ crackling, the raiders’ din and the crashing of the collapsing buildings long pursues those fleeing. Soon, however, they will be beyond the ridge, and everything will subside, with the exception of the fright in the hearts of the small group.
