- 7 Round Seal Paste Box (1662-1722)
d: 13.1 cm, early Kangxi
Painted in underglaze cobalt-blue and copper-red, the lid of this box has a central medallion of a lotus enclosed by a double line border, surrounded by branches of lychee and pomegranate with red and white fruit. On the underside, a six-character Chenghua mark in a double circle is surrounded by flower sprays and bamboo. The wet splash and dot technique compares with dish no. 11 (colour plate).
9 Large Bowl d: 30.2 cm, early Kangxi (1662-1722)
This three-legged Fujian (Dehua) blue and white bulbous bowl has a flat upper rim followed by a zigzag border typical of the late Transitional period. The body is decorated with rocks, various flowers and five different pairs of birds. The characters scratched on the base indicate that the bowl was offered as a gift in the 23rd year of Jiaqings reign (1818).
