- Dunnings, Saltspring Island. Sept. [September] 2, 1939.
Velvet. Teddy, the 3 year old buck shed
the velvet in the course of 3 hours
on Aug. [August] 26. This in the morning
after breakfast. He ate the velvet
as he stripped it.
Jigs, the 2 year old shed his
on Aug. [August] 29. It took him only
an hour to clean his antlers.
Molt. Both bucks molting heavily,
+ showing large patches of new
hair on the shoulders, back
+ neck. No apparent pattern.
The fawns are taking on the first
winter pelage. first.
The largest + best conditioned Sandy has not started yet + is very sickly.
Fawns. [underlined] Rosie fawned at 11 A.M., Maggie
at 9 A.M. + Trixie at 4 P.M. in
every case they chose the heavy
salal thicket in which to hide
the fawns.
The fawns are now being
weened. Trixie has weened
hers completely, Maggie is
kicking hers away when they
attempt to nurse.
