- Mt. Tzuhalem [Tzouhalem], Cowichan, B.C. [British Columbia] Jan [January] 12, 1940.
Fine day temperature about 40 at
mid day, 30 at 7 AM. No snow
at sea level, about 1 1/2 inches
on top of mt. [mountain] crusted + very
noisy. Slight changeable wind.
from the NE [northeast] + E. [east]
In woods from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
+ saw but 1 buck deer.
Others were disturbed but
always made off before we
were within sight of them
Very few deer low down
on the mt [mountain], mostly at [word crossed out] between the
altitudes of 1000 + 1600 ft [feet],
very few in the extensive
salal patches + open timber
on top.
Food. Along the edge of the
skid roads every clump of
coarse grass had the new
leaf growth browsed extensively
but the seed heads left
untouched. Species involved
were. Tricetum f cernuum
Glyceria pauciflora
Festuca sp. [species]
In one place, the honeysuckle
Lonicera hispidula had been lightly
utilized
