- Cowichan Lake Feb. [February] 7./40 [1940]
Pellet counts.
Pellets present on 69 out
of 87 plots counted.
Each plot was a millacre
in extent + plots were taken
at intervals of 25 yards in
straight lines E [east] + W [west] + N [north] - S. [south]
in the area. All cover types
save the swampy low land
were represented.
It might be advisable to
count the pellets on each quadrat
to see if perhaps fewer deer
foraging more widely would
spread the same number of
pellets over a wider area.
I doubt that that will be the
case as the deer is almost
always stationary when
defecating.
I established 4 pellet survival plots,
one of 107 pellets, 2 of 25 +
one of an uncounted number
One of these on the open rock, two
on trails + one in the salal.
