  • Cowichan L. [Lake] Aug [August] 4/40 [1940]. Marshes [underlined]. Dense growth of Athyrium [underlined], Equisetum, Mentha canadensis. Veronica scutellata, Skunk cabbage, Mimulus moschatus, Epilobium adenocaulon [underlined] + sedges. Of these the fern, equisetum, + mentha are heavily utilized - almost 100% tip browsed. The mimulus + Epilobium were not being eaten as far as I could see, the Veronica [underlined] slightly + the willows + alder extensively Stream in old part of burn. Ribes Sanguinea [underlined] lower leaves + fruit 100%. Ribes lobii [lobbii] - growing in shade + moisture, tip + new leaves moderately. Lactuca spicata [words crossed out] Crepis biennis - heavily but not a common species. Young willows + maples - heavily Adenocaulon bicolor [underlined] - moderately Petasites - quite extensively, leaves eaten, ribs often left Stachys ciliata [underlined] rare + not eaten Adiantum pedatum - eaten mod. [moderately] quite a common species. Erigeron canadensis [underlined], locally quite common - not eaten Marginalia: few Cripis [Crepis] nicaeensis fairly abundant + well utilized
