- Memo for Mr T [Miles Timothy] Myres [page typewritten]
Re [Regarding] T [Townsend's] Solitaires.
Those that I have been recording the last few years have nearly all
been nesting along a stretch of little used trail (buldozed [bulldozed] out
for cattle). The trail runs roughly E [east] & W [west] and the cut bank is
chiefly on the N [north] side. So it is reasonable to assume that unhatched
eggs (average about one egg per three nests) were affected by direct
rays of the sun.
The nesting pairs appear to occupy a territory, say a couple of hun [crossed out]
hundred yds [yards] of trail, and to oc [crossed out] occupy the same territory year after
year. For instance this years No [number] 1 nest is in a favorite place where
there has been a nest for several years within 100 yds [yards] of the same sp [crossed out]
spot. (never two nests at the same time). This years No [number] 2 nest
was built within 4 ft [feet] of last years nest so was almost certainly the
same hen.
When a nest is destroyed by a predator, which quite often happens,
the nest is usually quite noticeably trampled, whereas when the
young successfully fledge the nest afterwards is still tidy and
clean, in fact on two occasions has been used the second time.
This can be used as a guide when assessing the result.
In 1957 two at least of the nests had 5 eggs, whereas this year
the maximum was four.
This years No [number] 2 nest was destroyed by predator and this hen almost
certainly can be credited with No [number] 5 which was established later
and was less than 50 yrd [yards] from No [number] 2.
On one occasion a couple years ago when I banded young birds (by no means ready to fly)
