- Anna Hummingbird
Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia] Dec. [December] 1/85 [1985].
We have had from 1 to 4 individuals of this
species constantly present in our garden since
the summer of 1978. They have stayed all winter
each winter. I once saw a female carrying nesting
material (sock wool insulation from our house) in
February.
The last 12 days have been very cold here with
nocturnal temperatures down to from -5 C [Celsius] to -8 C [Celsius] +
day time temperatures never higher than -3 C [Celsius].
A [male symbol] + [female symbol] Anna's have been on our feeder
every day. We change it as soon as ice crystals
form in the sugar mixture. I have put it out
first (ie the feeder) between 7:10 + 7:20 each AM
As soon as the door opens a chorus of chatter greets
me from the big pine tree 100' distance + the bird, the
male, comes to the feeder. This AM at 7:15, with
a full moon still in the sky the bird began feeding
with so little light I could not read my Weston
exposure meter without a flashlight. The reading
was 0.8 with the screen open.
