- that the Sitka Spruce is a pioneer
tree. In the present forests it
occurs as scattered very large
trees. Hemlock + Red cedar are
the climax species. Over large areas
there is no undergrowth but here
and there sword fern, ostrich fern
+ two or three [words crossed out] deer fern occur.
The birds of the climax forest
are 1. in the summit stratum
Townsend warbler
Red crossbill, Golden-crowned Kinglet
+ Chestnut backed Chickadee.
2. In the ground stratum.
Varied thrush, winter wren, red
breasted sapsucker and tree creeper.

We yesterday left Q.C. [Queen Charlotte] at 10 AM and
12 1/2 hours later dropped anchor
in Rose Harbour. A fair + calm
day made travelling quick + pleasant.
Birds were common as far
as Cumshewa Inlet or Reef Island
but South of there virtually absent
Off the Sandspit Kittiwakes were
common + we saw 75 +/- other birds
seen en route were
500 +/- Rhino [rhinoceros] auklet, 100 +/- guillemots,
16 Calif [California] murre, 1 Cassin Auklet, 1 Ancient
Murrelet, 1 marbled murrelet, 4 Pelagic
cormorant, 1 large flock, 200 +/- larger cormorant
