- Red-Tail Hawk.
A columbian groundsquirrel + some
magpie feathers were obvious food
items.
Jasper. June 29/46 [1946].
Took one of the young of the
above nest - the larger of the
two as it appears to be of the
melanistic type.
Banff. July 9/46 [1946].
Found a red-tail's nest at 13 miles
W. [west] of Banff. It was some 35' [feet] up in
a large spruce on the N [north] side of
the road 25 yds [yards] beyond the 13 mile
post. The nest was a simple affair
built on top of a large witches
broom. The one young one left the
nest but was a poor flier +
had to be carried back up. It
is only about 5 weeks old.
Food remains were 1 microtus
longicaudus [long-tailed vole] + remains of several microtus
casts, col. [Columbian] groundsquirrel, red squirrel,
chipmunk + robin.
