- There were indications of a
heavy battle with branches
broken, snow tromped down,
and much blood and hair.
Wolves attacked from all
sides. The blood increased as
we neared the kill. Snow
indicated elk and [had] gone down
3 times before dying in
a hollow half-surrounded
with thick willows. Had
run about 120 yds [yards] after
first wound before dying.
Tracked wolves to a carcass
we killed 3 days previously
and found they never approached
closer than 12 yds [yards]. Wolves had
spent much time in vicinity
of kill walking trail in snow
to bed area in timber nearby.
Many tracks on lake where
they had played, and drunk
from hole in ice at Beaver
house. 7 Bull elk seen
less than 1/2 mile from wolves,
completely indifferent to barking.
Dec. [December] 27. Tracked wolves as indicated
on map. Definitely established
5 wolves in pack, possibly six.
We continually noticed
[different handwriting; possibly Jim Hatter]
