The following birds were reported by residents
in such a manner that there could be no
mistake:
Trumpeter swan, wintering at the narrows of
"Salt Lake" and also on the Stephens Is. [Island]
every year.
Bittern - one caught alive
Greater yellow-leg - common breeder
Snipe - Common in winter
Ptarmigan - Frequently taken usually at the
low elevations - probably h.a.alexandrae
Kennicott's Owl - Two pairs of wings of young
birds at cain at Jap [Hunt's] Inlet.
W. [Western] Goshawk -
Dryobates [underlined] probably D.v. [Dryobates villosus] harrisi
Sphyrapicus ruber nutkensis [underlined] Evidences on
hemlocks etc [etcetera].
