of antiquity we will not now
discuss; But of this you may be
positive, It is of Eastern Origin,
and of no modern date, as
witnessed by its passwords, Symbols,
and other secret matters, in which
you will hereafter be instructed.
For this reason it has been called
the "Ancient Order of Oriental
Humility"
There is an Eastern
story Extant, relating a circumstance
to which the Origin of this order
is attributed.
Xerxes the Great
was one day wandering unattended
through the Royal Domain, when
he met one of his subjects, who,
according to the custom of the country,
prostrated himself upon the Earth
with his head in his hands.
On being
commanded to arise, the humble
subject told the King, that if he
would assume his position, and
swear never to improperly reveal it,
he would impart to him an
"Important Secret" of incalculable
value, not only to himself, but
to the world at large
The King
complied and was instructed.
From that
day, (the story relates) the Kings
insufferable pride, and haughty
manner left him, and he founded
an order for the inculcation of
the virtues and principles of
Humility.
