  • LEFT PAGE 402 Tuesday March 4 Came in with heavy rain. Went ashore and Coopered and brought South on Board 23 Casks. From noon East fine & [and] calm. filled in hold 10 at Howe casks with Salt water. Took on Sound Board 2 casks 100 gal. Each Fresh Water & 2 Barrels --- Wednesday March 5 Howe The morning came in with heavy Sound rain. Took ashore and stowed South in cooper Shop 30 Molasses Casks. to at 12:30 Weighed and stood Nanaimo for Nanaimo with a fresh S.E. East Breese. Anchored off Gariolla [Gabriola] Island at 4:10. 2 Hours from land to land. 18 miles. Went to Nanaimo for Sundries. Heard of the Wreck of the George S. Wright off "Cape Caution" --- Thursday March 6 Nanaimo Got under Weight at 6 A.M. and South at 4 P.M. Anchored off Indian to Village off "Cape Mudge" Distance East 73 miles. Strong S.E. Breeze Cape all day. Indians aboard. Mudge 10 1/2 mile Souch of "Seymour Narrows" --- Friday March 7 Cape Morning fine & [and] Calm. Weighed at Mudge 8 A.M. Change of Tide, Light to S.E. Breeze. Worked up to "Knox South Bay" at dark. Kept under weigh Knox all night. At 11 A.M. got a Bay Breese from S.E. --- Saturday March 8 Knox At 3 oclock off Salmon River S.E. at 5 Blowing a gale. Took in Bay Main Sail. At 7:45 passed to "Alert Bay" running under jib, and foresail, at 8 A.M. came on a driving SnowStorm from RIGHT PAGE 403 --- North East. At 11:30 made "Fort Fort Rupert" and came to anchor, under Rupert "Shell Island", alongside of the "Lincoln." Remained here all night At 1/2 past 6 on Sunday the "Lincoln" started North --- Sunday March 9 N.E. Came in Calm. At 10 Weighed squalls and at 3 dropped Anchor in Hardy [Star Bay, struckthrough] "Hardy Bay" Bay --- Monday March 10 Morning came in cold and squally North at 4:30 got under weigh and at Hardy 7:25 came to Anchor in "Shushartie North Bay" A heavy N.E. gale and to thick snowstorm lasted all day East Bitterly cold. "Shusharte Bay" Shushartie opposite Newittee is a safe anchorage Bay No Danger Except a Rock at Entrance which covers at 1/4 tide. --- Tuesday March 11 S.E. Morning came in very wet and N.E. rained, hail & [and] snow all day. E. Anchored Wind all points of Compass. N.W. Remained at anchor all day in W. Shushartie Bay". Repaired rigging S. Took 4 Casks ashore and filled Shushartie with fresh Water. Newitta Indians Bay report Killing a whale outside --- Wednesday March 12 S.E. Morning came in with heavy Rain at & [and] hail. Indian report they got Anchor [hiyu? "IKta"s?] from the "Wright" E. but no one got ashore alive. "Carolina" here at anchor N.E. Heavy Snow squalls all day Remained at anchor all day. 16 days out. ---
