E. M. Forster (1879-1970), British novelist and essayist, is perhaps best known for his novels, which include Howards End (1910), A Room With A View (1911), and A Passage To India (1924). He attended King's College, Cambridge (1897–1901) and was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, a British intellectual circle.
The collection consists of letters written by Forster to his friend Sir Alex Randall dating from 1928 to 1968. Randall was with the British legation in Bucharest, Romania, and was later appointed to serve in Rome. The letters concern, firstly, Forster’s trip to Romania, where he stayed with the Randalls and a tour in France in 1928 and his journey home. Later letters contain references to literary figures, including Herbert Read, Harold Monro, and T.S. Eliot, as well as mention of reading James Joyce's Ulysses. He also refers to his visit to Africa and his sentiments about the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
