Sir Herbert Edward Read (1893-1968) was a poet, art historian, anarchist, literary critic, philosopher, prolific author, and champion of modern artists in Britain.
This collection consists of his correspondence with many important and influential individuals including Barbara Hepworth, T. S. Eliot, George Orwell among many others.

- Description:
- Part of a collection of correspondence between Sir Herbert Read and Alfred Richard Orage. Orage is most well-known for editing the magazine “The New Age”. These letters, spanning 1921 and 1922, primarily discuss Read’s work as a Readers and Writers columnist for the magazine in that time. In these letters Orage also frequently mentions P. D. Ouspensky, who studied under philosopher G. I. Gurdjieff. In 1922 Orage sold “The New Age” and moved to Paris in order to also study under Gurdjieff. In this letter Orage refuses a MS for New Age magazine because he has "foresworn the publication of anything realistic about the war".

- Part of a collection of friendly correspondence between Sir Herbert Read and novelist, literary critic, and editor, Ford Madox Ford. In this letter Ford provides reasons for his not having written, and invites Read to visit him for a weekend. Ford also announces his decision to change his last name to "Ford" in order to please a relative. In closing, Ford asks Read to keep the news of his letter confidential.

- Part of a collection of friendly correspondence between Sir Herbert Read and novelist, literary critic, and editor, Ford Madox Ford. In the first paragraphs of this letter Ford, in apparent response to the tone of Read's previous letter, pretends not to know who Read is. Ford then gives news of his small homestead, claims he is tired of talking about books, and invites Read to visit for a weekend.

- Part of a collection of friendly correspondence between Sir Herbert Read and novelist, literary critic, and editor, Ford Madox Ford. In this letter, Ford denies that he and Stella are aesthetes. He asks Read to visit as soon as possible before Ford begins the process of moving house, and advises Read that the sooner they have a discussion about Read's novel the better, so that Read will not approach the discussion too attached to a large amount of work.
