Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Jan 19 Tuesday Another version of The Exile . Nancy & Sam came. Sam with Karl to Circus, Nancy & L & I discussed plans for Jenny. I had an eye a wisdom tooth out easily but felt queer after. (Sam with his hearing box.) Norman to supper. He & Laura worked on Rimbaud, while N. & I talked. Epilogue . Laura destroyed a lot of old stuff not worth rewriting. Wrote to W.J.Turner apologising for having shaken hands in Cafe Royal after his references to Laura in the Faber anthology review. He must have thought me disgustingly distressingly Christian.

- Enclosure – RG Letter to Editor of Colne Times Editor Colne Times Dear Sir, Only four unfavourable notices of my A.P.P. , out of more than 100, have hitherto appeared in England. This includes one in your January 15 issue. By a queer fatality the first 2 – in the News Chronicle and Observer – was in each case followed by the sudden death of the reviewer. In the third case, the Schoolmaster, the notice appeared posthumously two days after the reviewer's death. As a student of coincidences I should be much interested to hear of any untoward accident that may have undertovertaken your Mrs. H. Halliwell, who has awarded the 'prize for the worst novel of 1936' to my book. Yours faithfully, Robert Graves
