Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

Norman to kid steak & kidney pie supper. Rich & Corvan through Watt offered me £2000 in 1941 for a book "In the steps of Hannibal". I said I didn't go in anyone's steps – H.V.Morton's, Christ's or anyone's.

Then sherry party at J.F.'s after buying a cand chandelier (37/6) Amabel & Clough Williams Ellis, Ruth Batchelor-Taylor (“Mrs Simpson”) Dick Freeman, Tanny, etc. Then Kitty (to whom a Georgian mirror for birthday present) Douglas West back to supper & Maisie: goodbye to two former. Then packed books, silver, patchwork rugs etc in big box. All Deyá stuff ready for Cook's men tomorrow.

- Jan 28 Thursday First really cold day. Laura Injection & to dentist. Epilogue . Laura's letter came, done. 500 copies for 3 guineas. Cooks men came & took luggour stuff – 2 chairs, 2 tables, crate of china, big box of books silver etc, 2 pictures. Len to lunch: talk about general situation & his plans for a comedy about a Lord Mayor & dance bands. Harold took us in a taxi to his Wandsworth ? house in a quite nice housing scheme like a college. Olive & he gave us a nice good supper and told us, among other things, of Mary B. telling them at the shop about Cyril Clarke being in love with her; & Geoffrey Grigson praising L. saying she was the best of the lot but he was afraid of writing about her for fear of saying the wrong thing. Epilogue .

Thinking up jobs for her. Mais Joyce. James, Mary, Maisie, Honor to supper. Talking after until 11.30. At supper Maisie just back from Spoken English conference at B.B.C. made rather official pronouncements. Alan & Woolworth: long night-telegram necessary. We have got through £200 in 3 weeks somehow. A little Epilogue in early morning.

(Laura in red & green Mallorquin skirt.) Bridget in magenta jacket. Alix secure in cheese; & gave us all samples. Epilogue late Bill Fuller has started his novel, David Reeves his book on furniture.

Alan back, talking of Beryl, dictionary, poems etc. Goodbye to Alan, to James & Mary who came to supper (Honor, Maisie, Karl too). Two drafts of a poem deriving from The Park Railings . Miss Wright at 8.30: accounts of inner life at Denham. Her work; her coming supersession. A.K.'s overdrafts. Cuts & lay-offs & dismissals. Would like to come to us. Jenny came up to Town: in a place at 15 Basil St. She lunched with Karl. We gave her her new ring. John & Lucie all day. John gave me a watercolour of the Place garden & Lucie gave Laura a small Bristol glass scent bottle & I them some 14 Bristol marbles: & introduced Lucy to 'my friend' Mr Mills for clasps. With Jenny to Green-Armytage who hopes to give her a clean bill of health on Wednesday & to a blood test opposite at 6 Harley St. G.A. gave Jenny good advice about men & about nursing homes. Goodbye to John & Lucy. Epilogue ; & checking Dictionary . Bed at 2.15 as usual these days.
