Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

I went to Watt: discussed Lives of Wives & Belisarius Lunch Another goodbye to Maisie (with a gift necklace) Lunch with Honor. Headache & stomachache rest of day; Sally came & talked – met Harry for first time. To bed with bottle: thunderstorm made me better. Laura's tooth gum has been burned to the bone by the acid on the plate.

Then Malcolm Johnson of Doubleday: settled the Lawrence typographical difficulty: mentioned Dictionary to him. Met George Buchanan again – sherry at his flat – & then supper with Honor & Gordon at Barcelona. (Advertising experiences). We are writing another letter to D.T. Letter from Short – G. in Castle because of road – Dr & Priest denounced him also & got camion seized. Advises against coming there. * Renewed rebel attack on Bilbao.

- June 15 Tuesday. D.T. letter appeared. I went to call on Eddie : he could only talk of pictures & Christopher Hassall . Lunch with L & Honor in Casanova Restaurant Then to St. Mary's where J.F. got Pannelt to see me. A fistula: must be cut out. Will take at least 3 weeks to heal. Arranged for Monday. Sally asking our advice about P.P. who wants to marry Kitty Palmer as was. Against it, remembering her in 1916. So was Roz over the phone. David Reeves, Norman, L & I to dinner at Barcelona; David with furniture book notes. Both he and Honor say how impossible it is to do an office job & other work as well. Watt believes that Heinemann are on to the two books scheme. * Bilbao still holding out.

We drew our Paris money to England on recommendation of bank manager. Bought a Georgian tumbler for 4/3 * then we had a beer & pie & sandwich olives supper with Mary & Bill Fuller. Worked out a new sort of novel for him to write. * Broken by Karl a few days later.
