Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- July 17th Saturday Messrs Pyke the agent recommended Mr. L. Trace a Cranleigh dentist: & he seems unusually good. Hopes to save the tooth: x-rayed it. for us Fortunately Alice Mace came & we engaged another woman for 2 hours a day. Rewrote a long-abandoned poem – ' Angry Samson ' – and did another 5 pages of Ghost , in spite of tooth still aching. Cooked bacon, potato, mushroom supper. Very stiff back. Then (Harry driving,) Laura, Alix, Beryl, Alan, Karl & I went in the car first to the 'Windmill' on Pitch Hill, then to Shere where there are deaf white cats one of which was sitting on the church porch roof among bats – and a Barn Theatre mostly given over to chambering & wantoness. The road to Shere is through a nutwood-covered tunnel – like a Russian sap.

- July 18 Sunday Got up & helped Harry with washing-up, and prepared the stove-fire and put in the roast. But was then driven back to bed with intense toothache & neuralgia: the toothache apparently from a tooth behind the one Trace has been attending to. Aspirins, hot bottle; gravy on bread for lunch. Managed to write 4 pages of Ghost before it got too bad. Mr. Trace consented to see me at 5. Found an abscess under the other tooth, an eye tooth. Got an anaesthetist to gas me & removed most of it with difficulty. It was rotten & fast in the bonebone. Afterwards I wept & went home to bed: removed a piece of casing with a forceps & felt better. I said, on coming out of the anaesthetic that the way wisdom teeth were fitted into the mouth made one a Manichean, sceptical of a wise Personal benevolent God. Finished Chapter 7 of Ghost .
