Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Part of a collection of letters to Sir Herbert Read from Michael E. Sadler. Sadler was a historian and educationalist who worked most of his career in university of administration. He was a champion of the English public school system, and also spent time as the president of the Leeds Arts Club. In this letter Sadler happily responds to a request from Read.

Laura arranged things at Boulestin's lobby with Wing Commander Gayford; while I bought socks, arranged repair of dressing gown, bought 2 cotton jerseys for 10/6 each. Norman at Boulestins. Oysters, pheasant supreme, white burgundy, braised celery, figs flambées and coffee. (£2.7.6; Norman's show) & then with Alan to drinks at a pub. Bought a penetentiary dog-kennel & sea shells money-box for Norman for his dreary visitors 1/- a time. Norman took us to St Peter's Square & off to Arkesden, leaving his suitcase behind. A walk along the Mall at dusk with Laura & round by Chiswick High Road. Len & Jane came after supper: Len talking about his Hollywood plans. Sunday Express rang up & told me I was a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. I made no statement beyond that this was the first I had heard of it.

Some work on 2 specimen chapters of Belisarius for Random House. Laura & I checking Alan's Auden-plagiarisms article. Dropped 2 shillings in Norman's money box for Vera Hankisson & Michael Ross. (M.R. came canvassing & stopped to hint for money for an art show). Beryl & Alan to tea: made out a list of 16 good minds & several doubtfuls. Supper at Len & Jane's: Betty Noxon too. Len showed me 'Dibpou' a dice-game & we played thread-puff. Fighting a headache due to wearing London clothes.
