Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Ap 17 Easter Sunday Two more versions of Easter Still Laura doing Persian and Greek wives. Karl & Marie have taken Easter off. We saw no one and did not even have a phone converstion all day. I had an upset stomach did no work in afternoon but read Lilian Mowrer's 'Journalist's Wife' in bed in the dining-room: in evening went through Act I Scene I rewritten by Laura with her. Title now Greeks & Trojans . In evening ate no supper, read again. Laura worked late on protocols

- Ap 18 Easter Monday. More work on Easter Still and on 3 other recent poems. Stomach better: all right by midnight. Dorothy & Montagu to lunch: some talk on education & sculpture but for the most part solid working on Preamble to protocols drafted by Laura. Finished at 11.15. We spent some time looking for a covering name for the whole activity. At midnight Laura found 'Countermand': not sure yet. Then began work again on Persian wives. Insurgents take Amposta. Norman is slightly on again with Nella.

Business with Margaret Russell about her husband who forbids Leonard to go into the Navy: had to take it up with Montagu. Jack Holmes rang up to acknowledge his lapse: forgotten now.

Laura wrote a letter to D.T. about danger of anti-semitism which they would not print. Honor will write it as an article or get Gordon to. Margaret & Leonard: Margaret to be cheered up. Atrocious accounts of cruelty to Austrian Jews in the papers, without comment. Working at my book about Laura. In Church St. bought blue dish with handles 9d and walnut work-box with nacre inlay 9d – Karl pasted in it the picture of Lieut-Col Alexander Murray at the massacre of Fort Talmai.

- Ap 23 Saturday Incorporated the misprints Eddie found, in letters to Cassell, Watt, Random House. The Mills's came to lunch. Talk of the richness of East End, and about anti-semitism, less in E. End since Fascism. Pawnbrokers only 20% Jewish. Talk of Jewish business optimism. Later political talk and he began to talk in the purest protocol way: putting to shame Ros who turned up & spoke up for the good in Hitler. The Mills stayed until 5. I went for a walk & bought 8 African bangles for 4/- and a picture by Cohen, the deaf & dumb employee of Borst's, for 2/6. Laura very tired: tried to work on Wives , could not, went to bed at 10.30 – until lunch next day. I began a draft suggestion for implementing the protocol now called Transaction – University of Moral Values.
