Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Aug 6 Sat. To Rennes by car (le patron driving) and did the week's shopping while Laura tussled with police. and behaved with indignation – quite successfully – i.e. when they wanted 3 francs 50 (and they had doubted her financial standing) she asked change for a 1000 francs note. I bought a blue oil-lamp & shade for 10francs (about 1/3d ) in the market & a brown holder for pens & things on my desk. Spent 1 hour filling in forms for 2nd time for a silver box sent me from someone in Ireland – I don't know who. In evening we all went to Montauban and sat outside Hotel d'Ouest while the Curé 's orchestra went past with lanterns drums & bugles – and people threw squibs at each other. Crab & melon for supper.

- Aug 8 Monday Poems still: now done except for a last going-over by Laura. Showery: Laura in bed with a bad headache. We are all very bored with Modeste Beryl rescued a black kitten, (Barnado) from the farm – attacked by a dog & left out all night in the rain. Bought a fountain-pen filler through which & Beryl gave it milk & brandy. But it died. Laura's application for a carte d'identité went in. By general consent we stopped the nightly 7¼ gamble. Laura, got up, was stumped by a title to the Macedonian lives, went to bed again, had a bad night.

- Aug 9 Tuesday. Laura in bed first half of day very bad head. She got up after lunch about tea time, with her title. Yvonne also had a bad head & did not come; so I with a bad head too did a lot of housework. Going over poems with Laura for last time. We also worked enjoyably on Dictionary in evening. Decided to sack Modeste. I bicycled to Montauban: there made an engagement with M.Pinson for L's carte d'identeté tomorrow. We played 7 ¼ in a new form: blind, and the dealer can exchange his first or second card, if he dislikes it, with anyone else. Have taken to making cigarettes again.

- Aug 12 Friday Another morning checking cross-copying of poems: then packed them up. Heavy sunless weather. A walk with Alan to the station & back across country. The M. problem has rather taken the taste out of things. Telephone men came with wires & promises. Dictionary : exploring words. Found myself staring at a word-group – minutiae & smithereens Getting hot water for a hot water bottle for Laura about 11 o clock I answered 'yes' unthinkingly to a voice that addressed me as Marthe. This kitchen ghost Beryl already knows: it left an old fashioned poker on the stove; which disappeared when she touched it.
