Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

David Alan & I invented darts game: up to 23; nothing under nine counts – inner ring of 6 counts 7 or 6 whichever – one must end exactly on 21. Dart in the door washes all out. One loses all that one fails of under 8. Huge dragon-fly and black ladybird visited us: the ladybird walking all over Laura. She cleared off all her letters.

- Enclosure – “Rules for Cambelpuk” handwritten by RG Rules for Cambelpuk Two players, each with 8 marbles of the same colour and one of a different colour – called the 'vassals' and the 'cham' – arrange thier marbles in a squares, the Chams in the centres, facing each other at opposite ends of a solitaire board. Thus: [figure – illustrative sketch of opposing 'teams' of marbles for cambelpuk game] The object of each side is to move his pieces – along the usual lines marked on the solitaire board, in any direction, but one move or hop only at a time, alternately – in such a way that his own cham reaches 'cambelpuk'– the position originally occupied by the opposing cham. The game ends when this is accomplished, or one cham is killed. Killing is done by hopping over; but only a cham may kill a cham – as only a vassal may kill a vassal. A cham may harmlessly hop over an opposing vassal, if he pleases, or a vassal over an opposing cham; and pieces of the same side can hop over one another, harmlessly, if they please. A cham must hop over any enemy vassal, not previously next[*] to it: unless one of his own vassals can kill it first. No player may repeat same two moves more than one repeat. * next means in next square at right angles,
