Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

Several other tourist passengers had sneaked up there by service entrance. Kennels; & the dog man making his 15 dogs turn sommersaults. No more seagulls I saw a film “Drame de Shanghai”

- Ap 25 Tuesday Met 2 Spaniards – & had drinks. One Portela prefect of a province, Noguera the other ex-manager of the Tobacco Control. Expect to be back in Spain before long. Blame Government defeat on Communist insistence of only buying arms from Russia. Visited engine-room – unfortunately some of the party were interested in machinery so had to spend ¼ hour there.

- Ap 27 Thursday Packing. Laura, David & I went to see Dogman & Dog-Girl ('Hector & his Pals') in the kennels. Saw a coasting vessel, & dozens of black-tipped gulls. Speed slowed down to allow us to reach New York comfortably. T.S.F. reports Hitler's threat to mobilize if conscription voted. Caused excitement: but a lie. Saw a lot of the Spaniards.

- Ap 28 Friday At 4 am got up & saw harbour lights. Arrived New York 8 am. Passports 9.30. landed 10.30 Tom, Julie, Schuyler Katharine met us. Customs men suspicious of Oxford Dictionary; but let Laura through without trouble. Schuyler drove us to Princeton in his farm-truck. That night he & Katharine came over to supper. Isabel & Jesse phoned from Los Angeles. I sleep in Tom's study in basement, Laura next door. Not much said. Distributed presents (the Havre things) & the wooden gifts. David lodging near: 5 doors off Einstein. Saw American robin: no newspaper placards, no garden fences.

- Ap 29 Sat. (Ten years ago Laura fell) Tom went off for 2 days to New York. Schuyler fetched us to New Hope in the car. Julie came too with the boys, who went off picnicking with Griselda, Maria, Katharine & Ben Jackson. & had a mudfight We saw the Ruin being built for us (by June 1st) & Schuyler planted a Carpathian walnut, we helping. The trees are not out yet. Introduced to David Owl the Indian & his brood of children. Schuyler wrote a letter to A & B to show Consul for their visa. Only history of Ruin: 'A nigger once lived there & the roof caved in.' Schuyler rather dumb, Katharine not so. On return Laura to bed early: Julie & I talked until passed midnight: very good.
