Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection PublicThe Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Tuesday July 2. To Posada. Only two masons working, two boys, 1 man whitewashing. Also all the water in the well used – aboys bailing it out with from inside. Came back & told Laura. Pepe summoned: rowed by Laura. Promises to get several more men and finish by Saturday. Gelat brings gravel from Can Medo. Undertakes to see that Pepé keeps his promise. Tells of Carindo's secret visit: the médico complains that he has been deserted. Gelat suggests demands to be made which he will grant: e.g. water by day not night for Son Morantes (more convenient to him), offer on behalf of Can Malrich Ca'n Malric to contribute 200 pesetas to making siqui – just so that the Doctor appears to have gained something: the last prize in a competition, says Gelat. Schw. stuff all evening. Wrote to A.G. & to Margaret Russell, with photographs.

Fair haired girl slightly hurt by taxi in Calle Arabi; on the way to Alhambra. Juan pessimistic about bull-fight. We all felt that something would happen to Belmonte. His first bull, black, awkward, knowing. A few passes & Belmonte got tossed. Thought he was killed but not blood, only the red of his coat (covered with lace work except in two patches). Tried to fight but gave up because of the pain. Lalanda finished the bull which was hissed. President's fault for not allowing the picadors to tire the bull. Belmonte himself complaining. Also Belmonte was clearly in bad form pale, perhaps affected by the sea-voyage. Lalanda's second bull bad too; only bright spots: Lalanda's unusually energetic work in second bull, some banderilleroing of Cayetano's and one or two good things in his first bull. Two nice mariposas by Lalanda, and one in rivalry by Cayetano whom we didn't like. Last bull was Cayetano's. He messed it and we came away before the kill. Letter from Korda: Claudius delayed owing to Laughton's illness until Feb. or March. And it was owing to Arnie Lawrence that he didn't continue plan of scenario with me. Wrote to him; all right. But asked him to answer Laura about Fantasia , Troy & No Decency Left . Wrote to H.S. asking him whether I should continue C.F.V. If he cabled, I would. In a moment of bullfight emotion Laura broke her topaz & diamond ring. Didn't notice it until an hour later: solid, too.
