Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection
User Collection Public
The Modernism and Post-War Literature Collection is comprised of works created by authors associated with modernism, a literary movement with contested dates, but largely regarded as taking place between 1910 and 1940. Authors featured here include Mary Butts (1890-1937), Robert Graves (1895-1985), James Joyce (1882-1941), Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), and Ezra Pound (1885-1972), as well as writers who produced work following WWII, such as Aidan Higgins (1927-2015), identified as late modernists or influenced by modernism.
Intellectuals and artists affiliated with parallel movements in other disciplines during the same period, such as modern art, are also found in this collection, as seen in the correspondence of Herbert Read (1893-1968) and photography of Gisèle Freund (1908-2000).

- Wed. Nov 11th (Armistice Day) Up at 7.30 packing up all our belongings. From Majorca we brought two suitcases and a basket. We now had these two suitcases, two handbags, a hamper for books, a crate for china, two tables, two chairs, and a lot of other stuff: we took a van. * Moved to 10 Dorset St. 2 minutes silence during the loading of the stuff: trumpeter on the roof of Trinity Church and everything frozen still except a loud angry voice from an Osnaburgh St Garage. Lunch at Rowan Tree. Margaret turned up; for an interview with Maisie at 6, helped us get in, helped me hang the two J.A. pictures. Laura went to Troy lecture at Burlington House, I rested. Boil troublesome. I used lapis with silver-lustre beads & strung on necklace. This leaves some amber over.

- Description:
- Part of a collection of correspondence between Adrian Stokes and Herbert Read spanning from 1934-1962. Stokes was a painter and art critic who also had an interest in psychoanalysis. It was largely due to his efforts and work that the small fishing port of St. Ives became a centre of modernist art culture. In this letter Stokes thoroughly praises Read's "The Art of Sculpture".

- Enclosure – Time & Tide Review of Antigua, Penny, Puce November 14, 1936; RG's signed letter of response Dear Helen Fletcher, It occurs to me to ask you what you have got. I mean,: besides an admiration for the New Yorker , broad-minded tolerance of Lesbians and the laughter of Little Audrey, realism, and a bold revival of the Victorian 'this is a work of art.' Obviously you have something that you think a lot of greatly prize, or you wouldn't write review so recklessly always. Is it something you have written or are writing, or merely something physical – a musk-gland or whatnot? If the former, I should like to see it. Sincerely yours, Robert Graves
