  • NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. CARD Victoria, September 4th. 1860. DEAR SIR,--I have taken upon myself the task of soliciting from the citizens of Victoria, a sum of money, for the purpose of paying for the much-need- ed repairs of Tiger Engine, and for the liquidation of the present liabilities of the Company. In undertak- ing to carry out this object, I was aware of the finan- cial condition of the Company; and on that and the welfare of our organization. I took upon myself the responsibility of asking our fellow-citizens for that aid which was really required for the continuance of our organization. I have now the gratification of stating to you that I have succeeded far beyond my most sanguine expec- tations, and that all classes of our fellow citizens have cheerially subscribed to a sum sufficient to pay off ourdebts, and for the necessary repairs on our Engine. Enclosed you will find the Treasurer of the Com- pany's receipt for Five Hundred Dollars--the total amount subscribed is Five Hundred and Fifty Dol- lars--leaving a balance yet to be collected of Fifty Dollars. I am sure the "Tigers" will always remem- ber this substantial mark of respect from the good citizens of Victoria; and in the Company's name I thank them. I wil take this opportunity of stating that Mr. Young, the Colonial Secretary, requested me to say that the "Bill for the protection of the Members of the Fire Department." had been passed and received the sanction of the Governor. In conclusion, permit me, as a member of the "Tigers" to say that in case our fellow citizens ever should require our assistance, (which I trust never may happen), let us remember how generously they came forward when called upon; and let our motto be, "Respect for the Laws, Obedience to the Orders of our Officers, and a Fireman's res- ponse to the call of his Fellow Citizens" I remain, dear sir, respectfully yours Thomas H. McCann Captain John M. Thain, Foreman Tiger Engine Company No. 2. Victoria, September 5th, 1860 EDITOR COLONIST--The foregoing letter, addressed by Thos. H. McCann, was submitted to Tiger Engine Company, at a meeting held last evening. It was unanimously moved: That Tiger Company, No. 2, hereby extend their heartfelt thanks to those citizens of Victoria who so generously came forward with their subscriptions to relieve the Company from debt, thereby evincing a willingness to assist those whose aim is "the public good." Respectfully Yours John M. Thain Foreman Tiger Co.
