  • ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Brian S. McElney has been a generous donor of Chinese archaeological artifacts to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (hereafter AGGV). In recent years, his various businesses have donated a sizable number of 20th century Chinese paintings to the AGGV as well as placing an even larger number on long term loan with the intent of future donations. Previously, a small portion of his painting collection was illustrated in the AGGV publication entitled A Selection of Twentieth Century Chinese Paintings in 1985. The present publication will include some of those previously illustrated as well as many of his other paintings. The collection is quite remarkable in scale and variety and includes most of the important Chinese watercolour painters of the 20th century as well as up and coming artists. We are indebted to Mr. McElney for sharing with us his thoughts on collecting in an essay at the back of this publication. In this publication we have also included a few Chinese oil paintings from a private Victoria collection as well as a few paintings which were recently donated personally by Chinese artists. Thanks go to Mary Patten and Paula Swart for proofreading the text, to Bob Matheson for the photography and to Chris Russell, Jay Heins and Jeremy Herndl for their help with the installation of the exhibition as well as Gislaine Coulombe and Johanne Juteau of the French Translation Department of the Hongkong Bank of Canada for French translation of the summary. A special thanks to the Museum Assistance Programme of the Department of Canadian Heritage for funding this publication. Barry Till August 1998
