Adaptation to high altitude in M [Mount] Kenya plants
a) Rosette habit
b) Protection from excessive radiation by [illegible word] surfaces or
pigmented epidermis
c) Maintenance of reasonably constant stem temp [temperature] by adherent
or erect foliage. In S. [Senecio] keniodendron [underlined] temp [temperature] measurements
beneath the sheath of dead leaves remained almost constant
at 4 [degree symbol] C [celsius] day + night. This is one of the most important
arthropod niches in the alpine zone.
Lower Alpine Zone:- S. [Senecio] brassica [underlined] + L. [Lobelia] keniensis tussocks of Festuca
pilgeri [underlined] up to 3' [feet] high and smaller clumps of Agrostis trachyphylla [underlined]
where rocky Deschampsia flexuosa [underlined], Anemone thompsoni [underlined],
Ranunculus oreophytus [oreophilus] [underlined], Haplocarpha rueppellii [underlined], Alchemilla
johnstonii [underlined], Geranium sinense [underlined] + Swestia crassiuscula [underlined] also Lycopodium saururus [underlined]
The Lobelia rosettes hold small pools of water in which
a species of chironomid lives. This is an important food of the
scarlet tufted malachite sunbird.
Arabis alpina [underlined] on eroded ridge tops along with some
short relatively conventional Senecios [underlined].
Where there are Procavia [underlined] colonies lush stands of
Heracleum elgonense [underlined] up to 3' [feet]; + the thistle Carduus keniensis [underlined]
+ Arabis alpina [underlined]. Around the dung piles Sedum ruwenzoriense [underlined]
is rank + was flowering. A rather insignificant yellow flower
Senecio purtschelleri [underlined] is another Hyrax plant - These are not
