At Cape Lookout, United
States at 6:30 a.m. of
August 18, 1879 the cups
of the Anemometer were
blown away while the
instrument had already
reached a velocity of 138
Velocity of miles per hour. An hour
Wind and a half later, as the
Storm Centre was passing
away and the Barometer
rising, the wind rose to an
estimated velocity of 165
miles per hour. At Cape
Henry an observed velocity
of 100 miles per hour was
reached. The Liverpool
hurricane of February 1868
was from 100 to 120 miles
per hour and the great
Guadaloupe hurricane
of 1865 from 100 to 130 miles
