  • LEFT SIDE [journal entries transcribed on previous image] Hastings Formula RIGHT SIDE 3 To make Paste that will stick Paper firmly to Bright Tin - mix a table spoonful of Brown Sugar to Flour Paste --- Imitation Rosewood. dissolve 4 oz. [ounces] of Potash in 1 gallon Hot Water and 4 oz. [ounces] Red Sanders Wood, when the color of the wood is Extracted, 2 1/2 tbs [tablespoons] Gum shellac are added and dissolved over a quick fire. Use this on a groundwork stained with longwood --- Fancy Gilding. The metal may be gilt by using solution made by dissolving as much gold in "aqua Regia" as it will take up. Fine linen Rags are soaked in this solution, carefully dried, and afterwards burnt to tinder. The substance to be gilt must be well polished; a piece of cork is first dipped into a a [struckthrough] solution of common salt in water, and afterwards into the Tinder, which is well rubbed on the metal to be gilt, and the gold appears with its proper lustre. --- A meteor fell near Farmersburgh [Farmersburg] MO. [Missouri] in 1874 which was 20 feet out of the ground and 25 feet in diameter It fell with a shock like an earthquake --- To Extract oil spots from cloth Etc.
