smaller than A. [Ancient] murrelets. Other nest
with an adult size young. Eagles nest 65'
up a live, leaning spruce. Likely a third
eagle's nest 1/2 way along N [north] side.
June 16. [1961]
Clear, strong N.W. [northwest] wind continues. Nine
more mice in same traps including
2 immature: 1 very small. After more
invert. [invertebrate] collecting launched boat thru [through] kelp +
hustled around the lee [south] side. Here
could see the odd puffin flying into
the formidable cliffs. Also Brandt's cormorants
apparently nesting. W. [Western] Flycatcher nest, 7 eggs 1' up in stump
Rode the heavy seas home, having a
good tail wind most the way. Nothing in
marten traps. Good dry out, clean up +
mug up in Ranger Station.
June 17.
Still clear but wasted morning doing
small necessary jobs. After lunch skim-
med west to Long inlet + hiked up crystal
clear creek bed for 3 hours. Easy walking.
very mossy. Dippers quite common. Many [underlined]
salmon bones along bank. Saw 4 [females symbol] deer,
1 slightly reddish. Quite a bit of otter
droppings under stumps.
June 18 [1961] - Sunday.
Rolled over in bed in disgust when
saw mountains covered in clouds but sun-
shine brought us to life by 10 + we
had a hasty big breakfast of mush before
pushing off to Long Inlet. Began our
climb by one pm. collecting mosses as we
went. Stayed to main branch of river
finding going very good. No hooting grouse.
Began climbing south west, while steep
in spots, we weren't stopped by any cliffs
+ at 3 hours we were just above the tree
line at about 2000'. Snow drifts at this
level. One grouse hooting. Mountains on
Louise I. [Island] clear. Began collecting alpine plants
as climed [climbed] thru [through] sparkling air. After 2
false starts found a route to the top of
the mountain. Peak about 3400', few others
around us higher. Few alpine pipits twitter-
ing over the void. Little bear sign but deer
seen bounding over the snow. The Pacific cover-
ed in clouds which began creeping in over
the mountains like a fuzzy blanket. At
6 pm, after a snack of crackers + cheese
on the peak, began glissading down.
Took a shorter, steeper route, reaching foot
at nine pm. Set off home. Tried
passing thru [through] narrows near Q.C.C. [Queen Charlotte City] but
