  • Journal. May 23, 1944 Willow Creek, After 36 hours snow + 14 hours rain the country was a mess this morning. Rain stopped in mid morning + remained off until after dinner then sleet began again. This morning the pond near the cabin was swarming with birds. Among them I noted Robins, thrush, water thrush, pipit, rosy finch, Lincoln sparrow, savannah sparrow, golden crowned sparrow, Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Kildeer [Killdeer], Red wing, redstart, myrtle warbler, Yellowthroat. They seemed to be getting insects from the snow covered surface. The snipe were working back among the trees. Shot + examined a young mule deer # 44-5-23. Game seen 2 Moose 2 deer. Saw + shot a marten [male symbol]. Willow Creek. May 24/43. [?1944] Rained hard all night but began clearing about 10 o'clock. Hiked up the Rock Lake trail almost to the park boundary. The going was bad, wet, with from 2 to 4 inches of melting snow over everything. Game sign including moose, elk, deer, wolf, rabbit + ruffed grouse was abundant in the edge of the timber clothing the divide between Rock Creek + Willow Creek
