May 23, 1944 Willow Creek,
After 36 hours snow + 14 hours rain the
country was a mess this morning. Rain
stopped in mid morning + remained off
until after dinner then sleet began
again.
This morning the pond near the
cabin was swarming with birds.
Among them I noted Robins, thrush, water
thrush, pipit, rosy finch, Lincoln sparrow,
savannah sparrow, golden crowned sparrow,
Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Kildeer [Killdeer], Red
wing, redstart, myrtle warbler, Yellowthroat.
They seemed to be getting insects from
the snow covered surface. The snipe
were working back among the trees.
Shot + examined a young mule
deer # 44-5-23.
Game seen 2 Moose 2 deer.
Saw + shot a marten [male symbol].
Willow Creek. May 24/43. [?1944]
Rained hard all night but began
clearing about 10 o'clock. Hiked up
the Rock Lake trail almost to the
park boundary. The going was bad,
wet, with from 2 to 4 inches of melting
snow over everything. Game sign
including moose, elk, deer, wolf,
rabbit + ruffed grouse was abundant
in the edge of the timber clothing
