  • Whitemans Cabin. June 15/43 [1943] snow lay 3 ft [feet] deep on Feb [February] 27/43.[1943] A Canmore man attempted to winter 22 head of horses last winter but had to take them out in February in very poor condition. Aside from a little sign around upper Spray Lake there is no sign whatever of elk wintering anywhere from there to here. Nothing but moose. Because of the horse activity it is difficult to ascertain the intensity of moose browsing. The vegetation is heavily cropped as it is (birch willow + cinquefoil). There were two or 3 elk tracks on the trail but nothing like as many as higher up - + no droppings.[underlined] I should say definitely that the elk of the upper Spray do not come in this way! A few deer tracks + some elk hair near this cabin. Game seen: - goat 4. mule Deer 8 Moose 2. Banff. Alta [Alberta] June 16/43. [1943] Left Whiteman cabin today at 10 AM + made our way down Goat creek + so into town at 2:30 PM. Day dull. The trail runs down the east side of goat creek + passes for
