Managing Coal Oil Lamps
Allways keep the burners very clean.
If they are dirty, dull or smoky, the
light is dim owing to the absorption
of heat by the darkened metal.
Once a month, place the burners in a
pan, covering them with cold water and
put in a little Soda and Soap. Boil
slowly for 2 hours, and then pour off
the blackened water. Then cover them
with boiling water, and a little more Soda
and Soap. Boil a few minutes, pour off
the water, rinse in cold water and dry
well with a cloth. Wicks can be boiled
in Vinegar & [and] Water. Dec 18 1886
