War Diary of 1st Battalion Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vol. 48, August 9, 1943 to August 31, 1943 - Rear Party Diary

Public

The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Monk's Gate Common, Whykehurst Park, England and is specifically focused on the rear party of the battalion when they split from the main body to participate in an exercise (there is a separate diary for the main body for this month). It has entries about the main body of the battalion leaving for the Combined-Ops training area, prisoner Private Glover who was given 8 months detention for being A.W.L. a couple months ago trying to escape one night and then having to be handcuffed in his cell, moving camp to Wykehurst Park, another soldier being arrested for being A.W.L. and Glover escaping again with two prisoners from the Regina Rifle unit, all prisoners being found and returned to the camp's prison, another soldier getting charged with A.W.L. and escaping and later being found, a camouflage course, moving camp and not divulging move orders to lower ranked officers over security concerns, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (rear party), unit fire orders (rear party), and standing orders for the advance party.
