Steel Tree, Neuville St. Vaast [Wills Photograph Album Page 18]
A photograph of the a Steel Tree or observation post used throughout the Western Front. Bomb damaged trees were replaced by steel replicas to use as camouflaged observation posts in order to watch enemy troops from a safer vantage point than looking up out of a trench. This was begun by the French troops. Trees like this could be found throughout the Western Front.
