War diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. The diary provides a daily summary of events, actions, activities, etc. This diary beings with the 16th at Oblinghem where they had inspections for feet, rifles, entrenching equipment, and respirators and includes attacks on the trenches, moving to Givenchy, digging trenches, fighting at the La Bassée Front, heavy bombing, an officers vs. men baseball games, big cloud of white smoke observed during heavy rifle fire, list of men appeared in the London Daily papers who were mentioned in dispatches or received honours, creating a gas proof machine gun dugout, a German high explosive shell causing a French observation balloon to descend, moving to new billets at La Maison Blanche in Neuf-Berquin, and the men helping farmers get in crops.
